Start with a clean, dry sofa. Gather removable parts, protect upholstery and exposed edges, and apply stretch film around the protective layer. These four illustrated steps show the method and suitable materials. Adapt it to the sofa's construction and upholstery, and always follow the manufacturer's instructions.

The essentials, in brief.

  • Remove parts only as the furniture instructions allow.
  • Protect the surface before applying film.
  • Arrange packing help in advance if you need us to assist.

01 · Materials and prices

Materials for packing your sofa.

A moving blanket provides a soft layer. Stretch film holds that layer together. Cardboard can add protection around exposed hard edges, while tape belongs only on the packaging. Have bags or boxes ready for cushions and loose parts.

These example prices are for the complete item or pack, checked on 11–12 October 2026. Prices may change. The number of blankets and amount of film depend on the sofa's size: one blanket will not necessarily be enough.

02 · Step 1 · Prepare

Gather cushions and removable parts.

Vacuum the sofa and allow any damp areas to dry completely. Remove loose cushions and pack them clean and dry. Empty any storage compartment under the seat.

Follow the instructions if legs or modules need removing. Take photos before disassembly and collect fittings in a labelled bag. A leg that looks removable is not necessarily screwed on. Tell the team about loose joints beforehand.

Step 1: Gather cushions and parts separately. Remove only the parts permitted by the sofa's instructions.

03 · Step 2 · Soft layer

Cover the sofa with a clean, soft layer.

Cover the back, arms, seat and sides with suitable protection. Check blankets for dirt and hard particles, and overlap layers to avoid gaps. Also protect exposed legs and lower edges.

Leather and imitation leather need a suitable layer between the surface and plastic. Film is not universally suitable for direct contact with every upholstery material. For a delicate finish or an uncertain material, follow the manufacturer's advice before packing.

Step 2: Apply the soft layer first. This shows work in progress; the final exposed side also needs covering.

04 · Step 3 · Secure

Keep the protection in place with film.

Add any edge protection outside the soft layer. Then wrap stretch film around the packaging so it stays in place without compressing upholstery or distorting loose parts.

Tape must touch only the packaging. Tuck in loose blanket ends so they cannot catch along the carrying route. Film and blankets are not lifting handles and do not replace securing the sofa in the van.

Step 3: Transparent film sits outside the moving blanket. This close-up shows part of the process, not a fully packed sofa.

05 · Step 4 · Final check

Check the whole package and measure again.

Measure the fully packed sofa, even if cushions or legs have been removed. Packaging increases its size. Compare the measurements with doors, lift openings and staircase turns at both addresses. A suitable van cannot solve an opening that is too narrow.

Keep the carrying route clear. Packaging must not conceal safe holding points or loose parts that could shift. If the sofa cannot be handled safely with the booked help, clarify the job with support before transport.

06 · Frequently asked questions

What about special sofas and other furniture?

  • Is stretch film alone enough? No. Film holds protection together but does not replace a soft layer against scratches and impacts. It must not be used to lift the sofa.
  • Should a corner sofa be taken apart?Only if its construction allows it. Check the manufacturer's joints and instructions. Pack detachable modules separately; do not force connections apart.
  • What should I do with a sofa bed?Clarify its weight and mechanism before the move. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for securing moving parts; ordinary wrapping film is not a transport lock. Contact support if special handling is required.
  • Can the sofa stay wrapped for a long time? This guide covers moving, not long-term storage. Do not tightly wrap damp furniture. Longer storage requires a solution appropriate to the upholstery, ventilation and storage conditions.
  • Does the same apply to chests of drawers and wardrobes? The principle of soft protection secured on the outside can apply, but drawers, doors and panels must be handled according to their construction. Use the guide for the specific furniture type.

07 · Packing help from Teleporter

If Teleporter will do the packing

Arrange packing with support before moving day so a suitable team and the necessary materials can be planned. A booking comment is useful, but does not by itself confirm that special packing can be done at your requested time.

On local jobs, packing forms part of the paid working time. Consumable packing materials are charged separately as agreed. Moving blankets, straps and a trolley in the van may be used without a separate rental fee under the driver's supervision and must be returned to the van afterwards. This does not mean disposable packaging is free.

Ready for moving day?

One final review.

  • The upholstery is clean and dry, and loose parts are gathered.
  • Surfaces, arms and exposed edges are protected.
  • Film holds the packaging together without tape touching the furniture.
  • The wrapped dimensions and carrying route have been checked.
  • Any packing help has been confirmed with support.
