Renting a van may suit you if you want to drive and have people to help lift. A van with a driver may suit you if you want someone else to collect, drive and return the vehicle. Compare the complete job, not just the first price shown in an advertisement.

The essentials, in brief.

  • Compare the whole task, not only the starting price.
  • Driving only means you arrange the lifting.
  • You can book helpers for a rented van.

01 · What do you need to organise with a rental?

What do you need to organise with a rental?

Check the chosen rental company’s requirements for your driving licence and the named driver, plus vehicle collection and return. Read the conditions for mileage, fuel or charging, deposits and additional costs. These terms vary; a low headline rental price does not describe every possible charge.

Allow time to collect the van and take it back. Opening hours and the return location need to fit the seller’s availability and your move. Check the actual vehicle dimensions before arranging collection of a large sofa or other bulky item; a van category name alone is not a measurement.

02 · What comes with a Teleporter driver?

What comes with a Teleporter driver?

You choose the vehicle and level of help. With driving only, you organise loading, unloading and carrying yourself. You can instead select a helping driver or a larger team when the load needs it. Describe access and heavy items so the chosen help is suitable at both ends.

Ordinary local transport uses a minute tariff with a 60-minute minimum for a vehicle booking. The driver’s normal journey to the first address and onward journey after completion are not part of the task. Loading, carrying and waiting during the task can still affect the time you pay for.

03 · Compare the same amount of work

Compare the same amount of work

Write down each option’s vehicle, driving, rental conditions, lifting help, parking and demands on your time. Do not compare an empty self-drive van with a service that includes two people doing all the carrying. Neither option is automatically cheaper for every customer or every route.

If you have already rented a van, helpers without transport are another option. Their minimum booking is 120 minutes. This can suit someone who wants to drive but needs help loading or unloading. Tell support if the helpers will need to travel between addresses so that this can be arranged.

Ready for moving day?

One final review.

  • Check rental conditions and vehicle dimensions.
  • Plan lifting at both addresses.
  • Include vehicle collection and return time.
  • Compare equivalent levels of help.
