Planning
Your first home.
Bring the furniture in.
Buying furniture for your first Copenhagen home without a car? Coordinate sellers, IKEA or JYSK pickups, carrying help and access before booking transport.
You do not need to own a car to bring furniture to a new home in Copenhagen. You can book transport for a single item or plan several pickups. The useful starting point is not the van: it is a clear list of purchases, collection conditions and the help required at your building.
The essentials, in brief.
- Measure access before committing to a purchase.
- Confirm collection and payment with each seller.
- Choose carrying help for both ends.
01 · Check the home before buying large items

Measure the space and the route into it, including doors, stair turns and lift openings. Ask the landlord or another local contact about access and stopping places. A sofa can fit in the living room but still be too difficult to bring through the entrance.
For second-hand purchases, ask for dimensions, current photographs and an honest description of condition. Agree whether the seller will help carry. If nobody at either end can lift, select enough help rather than relying on the seller or a friend who has not confirmed.
02 · Separate private sellers from shop collections
Separate private sellers from shop collections
With a private seller, you arrange the deal, payment and pickup directly. Give the driver the seller's contact and practical instructions. The driver cannot verify all parts inside closed boxes; special video checks can be discussed and take task time.
For a shop, wait for the ready-to-collect message and check its third-party pickup requirements. IKEA has specific authorisation and identification requirements. JYSK distinguishes a reservation paid in the shop from a prepaid online purchase collected there. Ask the selected store rather than assuming all collections work the same way.
03 · Combine stops only when the plan works
Combine stops only when the plan works
Several addresses can be included in a planned job. Put each item, address and contact into a simple pickup list. Choose a sequence that fits the sellers' availability and leaves room for loading, not just driving.
An added stop during the task needs agreement and available time; the driver may have a following job. Waiting at each seller can add to the cost. The initial five-minute free waiting period does not restart at every address.
04 · Choose carrying and payment deliberately
Choose carrying and payment deliberately
Driver-only transport works when you have people to load and unload. Otherwise choose carrying help, and agree assembly or packing separately if needed. Local bookings with a vehicle have a 60-minute minimum; the rest depends on the selected rate and actual task time.
Ordinary transport is currently paid in cash. Pay a private seller directly where possible, using the method you have agreed with them. Payment for the furniture and payment for the transport are separate transactions. Keep their conditions and contacts separate too.
Ready for moving day?
One final review.
- List purchases with dimensions and contacts.
- Wait for shop collection confirmation.
- Plan a realistic sequence of stops.
- Agree who carries and who pays for transport.
Have a good move — and a good start at your new address.
